** *****  *****  SHAWN  *****  *****  **

Special Focus child on the Shared List

Shawn was born in July 2008 and his special need is post-operative congenital Arthrogryposis.   He is a very sweet and very capable little boy who can walk, sit, raise his arm to grab a toy above his head and bend over to pick things up.  I also observed him reaching over to pull on a little friends ear!!!  I honestly didn't think I would have a favorite when I went to China but this little guy stole my heart within minutes...so much so that I asked to see him again before I left on our last day...  If I could've smuggled one child home with me...well it would've been him!

Shawn lives with a foster family in an apartment within the orphanage.  He is receiving his education through Half The Sky's Little Sister program and is described as an optimistic and active child.  He likes to listen to stories read by the teacher and has good language skills.  He understands instructions quickly and expresses his thoughts well.  Sometimes he thinks and explores difficult questions as if he is a "little teacher."  Shawn performs well in class, shares well and likes to play games with other children.  "He likes to play with the bowling ball and electronic piano.  He enjoys coloring and likes to dance with the help of the teacher. He is kind and will comfort others when they are sad."

I have lots and lots of video of this sweet boy showing off all he can do and it was REALLY hard to narrow it down to just a few minutes...  I will provide all of the raw footage for his future family.

** *****  *****  ZACK  *****  *****  **

Special Focus child on the Shared List

Zack was born in January 2010 and diagnosed with a deformed right ear and "light hydrocephalus" that never appeared to need treatment.  At 28 months he could do fine movements and used his thumb and forefinger to firmly hold cookies and put them into his mouth.  He could also hold a pen and scribble to imitate drawings.  He would go through books page by page, could walk on his own and was said to be very curious about everything when in a new environment.  They said he is cooperative and recognizes people he is familiar with and will reach out his hands to be held by them.  He likes to lie down in his nanny's lap and have his faced caressed.  At the time of his original report he was saying simple words and was quite interested in sounds.  Every time there is music on he will sway his hands and feet.  He also will move a stool to sit in front of the TV whenever it is turned on.  His report states that Zack, "is an especially lively and cute child."

MARCH 2014 UPDATE:
Zack has good general physical condition except his special need of deformed ear.  He has no new health problems and his foster mother has said that his ear deformity may affect his reaction a little, but not severely.  His mental development and motor skills are normal compared to his peers.  Although his language isn't always clear he can say simple words.  Zack communicates well and is very attached to his foster mother.  When he is upset or sad he can be calmed down with snacks or toys.  He is not a picky eater and is potty trained.  He currently attends a Kindergarten class and is said to be outgoing.

** *****  *****  HENRY  *****  *****  **

Special Focus child on the Shared List

Henry was born in June of 2007 and is diagnosed with Post-Operative Congenital Heart Disease.  I met Henry in July 2013.  This little guy had so much energy and was ALL BOY running around and playing and showing off for us.  I was alone in a stairwell with him and nearly fainted when he jumped from the halfway point on a flight of stairs to beat me to the bottom!  I tried to scold him but her gave me one of those smiles that led me to believe he was going to do it again on the next flight...yep!  This little guy is so full of life and just adorable!!!  I imagine he keeps his foster mother on her toes!  He was very curious about us and followed us all over the orphanage building!
